Day 1 - Srinagar
Srinagar, the heart of Kashmir, serves as our initial base. The day kicks off at 10 AM with a trip briefing and route overview. Explore Srinagar’s natural and man-made beauty, characterized by serene lakes and majestic Himalayan vistas. Despite chilly winter nights below zero, daytime temperatures reach around 10 degrees Celsius, offering an enjoyable experience. Expect snowfall during this season.
Start with a 15 km warm-up drive to Astanmarg, a viewpoint providing a panoramic view of Srinagar and Dal Lake. Return to town to visit Shalimar Bagh, a Mughal garden built by Emperor Shah Jahan in 1616. If time allows, explore Nishant Bagh, the second-largest Mughal garden in the valley.
In the second half of the day, explore Nigeen Lake, adjacent to Dal Lake, separated by a causeway. As dusk approaches, marvel at the sunset colors over Dal Lake, a truly captivating sight. In the evening, head to Challi Point near Dal Lake for local street food, a perfect spot to unwind and savor small bites.
Day 2 - Drive from Srinagar to Gulmarg via Doodh Pathri
After breakfast, we embark on a journey to Doodh Patri and then to Gulmarg, the most beautiful peak in Kashmir, especially in winter. Doodh Pathri, nestled in an alpine valley at 2,730 meters (8,957 ft) above sea level, is surrounded by snow-covered mountains and pine, fir, and deodar meadows. The challenging trek, particularly in peak winter, involves navigating through the region’s heavy snowfall with 4×4 vehicles. Doodh Pathri is sparsely populated, with only a few shepherd houses, providing an opportunity to experience raw nature.
The convoy proceeds to Gulmarg, winding through snow-covered routes with breathtaking views from Tangmarg to Gulmarg. In winter, Gulmarg boasts some of the world’s best ski slopes and the highest 18-hole golf course. The snowy landscape sets the stage for skiing, snow scooters, wooden sled rides, and a chance to catch a glimpse of Nanga Parbat, weather permitting.
In addition to the snow-covered meadows, the first day includes visits to touristy places like St. Mary’s Church, Maharani Temple, and the Golf Course in Gulmarg.
Day 3 - Leisure Day at Gulmarg
Today, enjoy a leisure day amidst the snow-clad peaks of Gulmarg, with a breathtaking view extending to the horizon. Experience the Gondola ride to the top of Apharwat Peak, but note that weather conditions may affect the ride and trek to Alpather Lake. The trek depends on Gondola availability to Phase 2 and snow conditions.
Head 3 kms from the hotel to the Gondola booking station. The two-stage cable car takes you to Apharwat Peak, with a stop at Kungdoor Station (3100m) for 10-12 minutes. Explore, enjoy the views, and grab a bite. Continue to Phase 2 in another 10-12 minutes, reaching the top of Kongdori Mountain (3980m) with spectacular views.
After soaking in the scenery, trek from Phase 2 to Alpather Lake (4200m), known as the Frozen Lake in winter. The 2-hour, approximately 3 kms trek offers stunning views, including the Line of Control and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Return to the hotel in the evening and rest for the remainder of the day.
Day 4 - Drive from Gulmarg to Pahalgam via Bota Pathri
Early start to Bota Pathri, a snow-covered road from Gulmarg through dense forests near the border. Opt for an ATV ride, explore the frozen lake, and visit Shepards’ homes. Enjoy a hot Kashmiri Chaai and breakfast from a street stall.
Continue to Pahalgam, a 150 km journey taking 4-5 hours. Winter in Pahalgam is enchanting, with snow-covered streets resembling a postcard scene. Drive through the captivating surroundings, frozen Lidder River curves, and falling snowflakes.
Check-in at Pahalgam, then head to Betaab Valley, 10 km away. Named after the Bollywood movie shot here, the valley boasts snow-capped mountains, Deodar trees, and pine forests. The road to Chandanwadi may be blocked in winter. Prepare for sub-zero temperatures, ranging from 5 to -5 degrees Celsius.
Day 5 - Pahalgam – Aru Valley
This morning, head to the must-visit Aru Valley, 15 kms from Pahalgam, known for its stunning beauty. Capture scenic spots along the drive, especially in winter when it transforms into a snowy wonderland. The temperature ranges from -5°C to 10°C, sometimes dropping below -5°C, offering a pleasant experience for snow enthusiasts.
Explore Aru village to experience local hospitality. The Lidder River, originating from Kolahoi glacier, accompanies your Pahalgam trip. It provides clear water for various activities like white water rafting, angling, horse riding, and fishing. Return to the hotel, keeping it light for an early start the next day.
Day 6 - Drive from Pahalgam to Srinagar w/detour of Martand temple, Kokernag, Daksum
Early start today. Head to Anantnag, a beautiful district, before driving to Srinagar. Explore Daksum, an offbeat gem at 2,438m in the forests, surrounded by mountains and the Bringhi River. Visit Martand Temple enroute, an 8th-century Hindu temple dedicated to Surya, now in ruins. Stop at Kokernag for gardens, freshwater springs, and trout farms.
Daksum, also known as Daksum Valley, offers a scenic view of the Daksum Waterfall in the forest. Drive back to Srinagar, stopping at the ruins of Awantipora temple. Check in at a houseboat in Srinagar for the last night. Explore the floating heavens, experience cultural charm, and delve into Kashmir’s heart.
In the second half, enjoy a Shikara ride on Dal Lake, witnessing the sunset and snow-covered views. In peak winters, see the partially frozen Dal Lake cut by Shikaras, creating an artistic view. After the ride, witness the Sound & Light Show on Dal Lake’s banks at 8 pm for 30 minutes. Retire in your houseboat for the night.
